The power of formative evaluation: Designing extended professional development

In this paper, we use Owen’s (2011) framework of evaluation to illustrate three forms of formative evaluation (clarificative, monitoring and interactive). These were used in a two-year professional development program for STEM teachers in Australia that was designed to be flexible and responsive to the needs of the participants…By using different forms of evaluation to examine the ongoing processes and effects of a professional development program, it is possible to make ongoing judgments about its worth or value, which in turn can inform decision making and clarification of the core ideas underpinning a program.
